Historical Marker 296 – Major General C. C. Washburn

The first shot below is part of Rest Area #31 on French Island in the Mississippi River by La Crosse.

Unfortunately, almost no one ever sees this. It’s on the back side of the building next to the river.

What’s just as bad or worse is that the two historical markers at this rest area are also located back by this door, and they face the river!

As I stood facing the parking lot to take this shot, the Mississippi was wandering a few feet behind me. What were the designers thinking?

This marker is on the southwest corner of the building. Marker #264 is on the northeast corner.

The city of Washburn, north of Ashland, was named for Cadwallader.
